Cognition: Signs MOU with U.S. Department of Energy to Join The Genesis Mission

The Genesis Mission's goal — doubling the productivity of American science within a decade — depends on software.

Cognition signed a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. Department of Energy to join the Genesis Mission—a national initiative launched by executive order in November 2025 and described as “America’s Manhattan Project for AI.” The mission ties America’s 17 national laboratories, industry, and academia to supercomputers and federal scientific datasets.

Why it matters on this desk

This is Cognition’s federal story moving from FedRAMP paperwork into a named national program. The pitch is blunt: doubling scientific productivity in a decade is a software problem—pipelines, simulation codes, aging open-source stacks—and Devin is the autonomous engineer they want in that loop.

How Cognition says it will help

  1. Software and data security — find/remediate vulnerabilities in scientific codebases (often aging OSS).
  2. Modernizing legacy scientific code — document, test, and translate decades-old Fortran/C++/COBOL so institutional knowledge isn’t lost as authors retire.
  3. Expanding scientific workforce capacity — offload engineering (pipelines, model infra, deploy) so researchers spend more time on science.
  4. Cloud modernization — migrate legacy apps/infra to cloud-native platforms.

Cognition notes FedRAMP Class D (High) In Process (Marketplace-listed); Devin Desktop and CLI are already FedRAMP Class D (High) Authorized and positioned for ITAR / IL4–IL6 workloads.
